As a physiotherapist for the past 23 years, I’ve seen a lot of progress in our profession and in pain management. One of the more recent advances is in the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for joint, tendon, ligament and muscle injuries. This is an exciting opportunity for people with injuries that haven’t resolved with other types of treatment.

What Is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma is a procedure that we do right in the office. We take a blood sample from your arm and then separate the platelets from the rest of the blood. We then inject the platelets into the site of injury or irritation.

The injection of the platelets stimulates the body’s healing response so that the injuries can heal more and therefore improve your pain.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The whole procedure including taking the blood sample and the injection only takes one hour. It is a simple, yet effective treatment for many injuries.

How Long Does It Take for Platelet Rich Plasma to Work?

It typically takes 6 weeks to start noticing a change in pain or the ability to do activities. By 3 months, the effects of treatment will be even more noticeable.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

It typically takes 1-3 treatments for the full effect and benefit of platelet rich plasma. We monitor your improvement and discuss treatment options regularly. It is also important that you have physiotherapy after each treatment. Your physiotherapist will give you specific strengthening exercises and help guide you on your return to your activities.

Does Platelet Rich Plasma Really Work?

Have a look at this CTV video about PRP for the answer!

We are excited for this treatment and to see more people benefiting from platelet rich plasma!
