A surprisingly effective non-drug treatment for neck pain

Posted on: October 24th, 2019 by Herbin Samarumaraj

Does your job involve sitting in front of screen more than 80% of the time ? Do you get neck pain ? It might be due to a muscular imbalance at your neck and shoulder. This is what I specialize in, so lets talk about that.

Most neck pain starts with muscular imbalance, this means some of the muscles get stretched and  other groups get shorter.  As a result, changes in joint pressure occurs in the joints. You might feel symptoms of joint stiffness and pain initially. If not treated it can lead to altered posture, wear and tear of joints and muscles and might affect your spinal nerves.

What’s good posture?

When you stand against a wall with head and heel touching the wall, your ear should be in the same line as your shoulder, That’s  how your neck position should normally be.  (Give it a try – have someone take a picture of you)

Some tips to prevent neck pain:

  • Use a comfortable pillow
  • Ergonomically adjusted work area
  • Change position frequently
  • Sit straight and tall
  • Exercise regularly
  • Take breaks and stretch

If you experience constant neck pain or recurrent neck pain, consult your physiotherapist soon. We do a complete assessment and recommend a treatment plan. You do not need a referral to see your physiotherapist (some insurance companies might ask for one though – check with yours) I implement an integrated therapeutic approach like posture correction, soft tissue and joint mobilization, progressive strengthening exercises, acupuncture, modalities to relieve pain, home exercise program, and endurance / functional training.
