My Jaw Hurts! What Can I Do?

Posted on: September 6th, 2019 by Alexandra Stam

Is jaw pain getting you down?  Are you plagued by clicking in your jaw every time you chew something delicious?

Is beef jerky out of the question for your aching jaw?

Have you seen a dentist or doctor and been diagnosed with something called TMD?

What is TMJ?

TMJ is actually the name of your jaw joint (temporomandibular joint).  TMD (temporomandibular dysfunction) is what we call a jaw problem or jaw pain. It can also be a clicking or popping in the joint as you open or close your mouth. It can be caused by a variety of things such as grinding or clenching teeth, arthritis, injury or simply genetics!

Regardless of what caused your TMD, there are a couple of things you can do.  Some physiotherapists and massage therapists have particular expertise in  TMD problems, but have you considered acupuncture as well?

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can also help you manage TMD. Using acupuncture, it is possible to reduce pain by reducing inflammation and relaxing the muscles around the jaw. I also do a full assessment of any other dysfunction that may be contributing to your TMD.

TMD is often associated with headaches, migraines, tinnitus, neck pain or stress.

Using acupuncture and some of my other modalities can help relieve TMD and the associated symptoms.

Every treatment plan I make is individualized to you.  Typically a TMD acupuncture treatment would include an acupuncture point over the joint, and an acupuncture point over the tight muscles around the jaw to help those muscles relax. I would also add acupuncture points based on any associated symptoms you may be experiencing, like headaches, neck pain or jaw-clenching associated with stress. This way we get to the root cause of the TMD.

In my practice, I have had great success in treating TMD and it’s an area I have a keen interest in.

It is possible to eat pain-free again.  Maybe it’s time to add acupuncture to your arsenal.  I’m here to help.
