Exercise Therapy
Exercise is the foundation of the physiotherapy profession. Even though newer, advanced treatments continue to appear in the health care field, getting your body back in shape through exercise will never become obsolete.
In addition to an overall improvement in your day-to-day function, there are four benefits of therapeutic exercise:
- Increased muscle strength (you might be surprised at how weak you are in certain areas. There are literally hundreds of muscles in your body that may need attention.)
- Improved muscle flexibility or joint range of motion (you may need to get past those 4 or 5 favourite stretches of yours that aren’t doing it anymore)
- Improved balance and coordination (it’s remarkable how quickly we can lose balance and control after injury, or as we age – but this is reversible)
- Improved posture and body awareness (learn how to sit, stand and bend properly, and most of your pains will disappear)
Learning Therapeutic Exercise from our Physiotherapists
Distinct from general fitness-type programs, therapeutic exercise with a physiotherapist requires specific one-on-one instruction to learn each exercise. Once you learn the exercises in the clinic, you will likely need to keep doing them at home. To help you remember the specific exercises, we’ll send you an email (or provide you with a handout) with your personalized program fully detailed.
